Three on Thursday {Cottage Grove, Oregon Photographer}

1) Today marks day one of our last minute renovation project for the summer. We decided that in order to maintain some amount of sanity, we needed more storage in our house (the photography props are quickly taking over…I think they multiply in the closet). So, we are tearing down a HUGE fireplace and chimney that go through the center of our house and haven’t been functional for a very long time. We will then create built in cabinets where the front of the fireplace was, and a large closet on the chimney side. Lets hope everything goes quickly, since David heads back to work on Tuesday next week!

2) Last week, I created the best dessert E.V.E.R. Homemade double chocolate chunk brownies with chocolate fudge frosting and a graham cracker/caramel crust on the bottom. I combined three different recipes to create the three different layers to my concoction, and I must say, it’s chocolate heaven! However, if you are not a fan of gagging on sugar, this may not be the dessert for you.

3) It still hasn’t quite sunk in yet that next week, David will be heading back to work without me. It is going to be very weird not to go to the high school to work every day (although I’m sure Paige and I will be there quite often to visit).

What’s in my bag {Cottage Grove, Oregon Photographer}

One of the most common questions photographers get is about the gear we use. As I’ve said before, it’s not always about the camera you use, but how you use it that really matters. However, having the proper equipment will certainly make the job easier and it will help you achieve a better overall result.

I am a Canon girl. Always have been. I have nothing against Nikon (or any other camera brand), I’ve just never used them. My first (film!) SLR camera was a Canon EOS Rebel G. When Canon first introduced the Digital Rebel, I made the switch to digital and never looked back. I never enjoyed being in the darkroom, so I was more than happy to give that up in exchange for the “digital darkroom” that is PhotoShop. I am glad, though, that I have the film background because I am able to get my image right “in camera” and spend less time “fixing” the image in post-processing.

My current camera body is the Canon 5D MarkII. I love the wide view of the full frame camera, but I also miss the extra zoom length you can get out of the cropped sensor bodies (7D, 60D [along with previous versions], and the Rebel series). Before I got the 5D, I was not interested in having video built into the camera. I have slowly been working on incorporating video into my sessions, but I was using a real video camera. Now that I have the video option built in, I am finding that I am using it more than I expected.

I have gone back and forth between using zoom lenses and prime (fixed focal length) lenses for years, but I am currently using mainly the 24-70mm f2.8L and the 70-200mm f2.8L lenses. I also have the 28mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 lenses. I recently sold several other prime lenses that I just didn’t use very much. As much as I love my prime lenses, I often feel like I am using up too much time during sessions having to switch lenses. This is where the zoom lenses shine; I have my full range in just 2 lenses.

Natural lighting is not always ideal. In order to be more flexible in the locations I use and the time of day that I shoot, I often supplement the existing natural light with off-camera flash. I have several flash units, ranging from the Canon Speedlite 580ex to a fully manual Vivitar flash unit. I also have a full studio light setup for indoor studio sessions and things like school dance portraits. I have a variety of backdrops, flooring options, props and accessories for studio sessions as well.

When I am out shooting, I carry my lenses and most of my accessories (flashes, extra batteries & memory cards) in my Shootsac, which I L-O-V-E! I am thinking about buying a new cover for mine, since the one I have was purchased to match my old branding, but I haven’t seen the perfect one yet. They introduce new covers every month, so I am just waiting for the perfect cover to be announced. I am also on the lookout for the perfect camera bag. I want something small that will hold basically just my camera with a lens attached and a few small accessories. I also want it to look like a purse, and would love for it to be light blue/aqua/turquoise. I have been drooling over Kelly Moore Bags and Epiphanie Bags, but haven’t found just the right one yet. If anyone has any recommendations for me, I’d love to hear them! Please post links in the comments!

So, that’s pretty much what I use on a regular basis. Any questions? Just leave me a comment.

Oregon Zoo {Portland, Oregon Photographer}

We spent a couple of hours on Thursday at the Oregon Zoo in Portland showing Paige all of the animals. She enjoyed the animals that moved a lot (especially the fish), but was not very excited about anything that was slow-moving or sleeping.

She really loved watching the train go by & naming all the animals, and I’m sure she would have enjoyed it even more if more of the animals had been awake! That also would have made for better pictures!

Fun on Friday {Cottage Grove, Oregon Photographer}

A Midsummerpuppet Night’s Dream is in it’s final weekend at the Cottage Theatre. This is a great show, and it you haven’t seen it yet, get those tickets now!

This weekend, head down to the WOE Fairgrounds for the Cottage Grove Heritage Fair & Timber Show! There will be games, food, exhibits, a hay rodeo, a logging competition, livestock competitions, live entertainment and pony rides! The fair is open on Friday, August 19 & Saturday, August 20 from 10am-11pm, and Sunday, August 21 from 12pm-6pm.

The Village Green is hosting the Park Pour on Saturday, August 20 from 6:30-9:30pm. The event will include food, drinks and music by JSQ (this is the jazz quartet that David plays saxophone for). This is a benefit for Bohemia Park and admission is a $50 donation per person (this includes food, wine & beer at the event!).

The Village Green is also hosting the Cottage Grove Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 21 from 9am-4:30pm. You will be able to see antique, classic and contemporary cars, and also enjoy entertainment (including the JSQ again!), prize drawings, food and drinks. There is a $5 admission fee (children under 6 are free), and the South Valley Rotary will be donating the proceeds to the Cottage Grove Boys and Girls Club and the Children’s Playground at Bohemia Park. I will be there starting at 6:30am to take pictures of the cars as they drive in, and then will continue to take pictures of the event, so stop by and say hi if you see me!

If you need something to do next week, do your produce shopping at the Grower’s Market at Coiner Park from 4-8pm and check out the Concert in the Park to hear Breakers Yardstarting at 6:30.

And if you need to escape from the heat, don’t forget to check out all of the great weekly events for kids of all ages at the Cottage Grove Public Library. From story time, to sing-alongs, to movies, they’ve got something for everyone.

Hope you had a good turnout for both events!

1) It’s Z-day! We are heading to the Oregon Zoo for a few hours today with Paige. I hope she naps well on the way to Portland so she is well-rested when we get there. She has spent a lot of time the last few days looking at her animal books and naming all of the animals. About the only one she can’t name on her own is a goat.:)She even knows the difference between lions and tigers, so it will be interesting to see how her love of book animals translates to the real thing!

2) I have been enjoying my new Canon 5d MarkII and learning how to use it for video. I didn’t necessarily want a camera that shot video, but there’s really no other option anymore. I figure since I have the option now, I’d better get used to using it! It takes some time to figure out how to pan & zoom at the same time while also keeping everything in focus, since auto-focus doesn’t work in video mode. I’m hoping to start incorporating a little video into my sessions soon.

3) I really can’t believe summer is almost over. In less than 2 weeks, David will be back to work and getting ready for the students to start arriving. It will be very strange not to be going back with him this year. And, typical for us, we just decided to take on a pretty major project at our house that needs to get finished before school starts. We have a fireplace with a cracked chimney that is not usable and takes up a huge amount of space in our house, so we have decided to take it down to make more room for storing all the photo props I keep accumulating… Of course, taking down the chimney means we have to repair the roof, the ceiling, the floor, and the entire wall of faux brick on the front of the fireplace. We are eventually going to be adding built-ins to the wall where the fireplace is now, and I know it will look great when it is done, but we really should have thought about starting this project in JUNE!

Sigh… School started on Tuesday here. Trying to figure out when we can all go to a waterfall about an hour away. May just pick up Corban from school one day and go strait there. So antsy to explore our new surroundings. Here is someones (no idea who they are) you tube video of the place. YOU CAN SWIM BELOW THE FALLS. I’m so exited! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6hsPdyx76w
